12-Days of Mourning is Unsettling
No member of the Diaspora has any right to tell the Jamaican government what to do and how to conduct the country’s affairs. However, any Jamaican living abroad can share their views freely without persecution. The topic for today’s discussion is apolitical, and I encourage opinions for or against it.
The topic of 12-day-mourning goes to the core of my being, and I decided to share my thoughts. Like many of us who grew up in 60-the 70s, we experienced the impact of colonial attitudes, actions, and mentalities that shaped much of who we are today.
The term colonialism is to Jamaica as Jim Crow Laws and Black Codes are to America.
Colonialism represents unfairness, corruption, and unwarranted treatment and deaths. With this, I take the position that Jamaicans should not be forced to mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Forcing this thinking upon the masses, not only affect the people at home but Jamaicans around the globe. Such representation of colonialism brings back to the forefront the realities of slavery and the business of slavery into what we thought we were trying to rid ourselves of. “12-days of mourning” is excessive, brutal, and uncalled-for. This does not represent me.
